Abstract

All current and potential variable star observers and researchers, whether members of VSS or not, are invited to a round-table discussion of southern variable star work and in particular, Variable Stars South. Topics include but are not limited to: • Critique of progress and directions in VSS as an organisation; • Resources, communication, teamwork and collaboration for effective southern VS research; • Development of new VSS projects and programmes, and future directions for existing ones. This meeting will have major input into determining future directions of VSS. Attendees are encouraged to prepare critiques and proposals (including suggestions about handling any organisational load), and to email these beforehand to vss-members@googlegroups.comfor discussion.

Biography

Dr Tom Richards, FRAS Tom’s primary research interest is variable stars, in particular eclipsing binaries. In 2009 he was appointed Director of the Variable Star Section of the RASNZ, now called Variable Stars South. Tom was awarded the Murray Geddes Prize of the Royal Astronomical Society of NZ in 1959 and the Berenice Page Medal of the Astronomical Society of Australia in 2006, for his research work as an amateur astronomer. He is a past president of the Astronomical Society of Victoria.
