Supernovae Don’t Go “Pop!”

Abstract

Anyone who spends time doing astronomy outreach begins to notice that some questions get repeated. “How far can this telescope see?” is a common one, as well as “what magnification is this?” Some of the most commonly-heard questions will be addressed in this talk, as well as some of the craziest! Bring along your own experience to share, or perhaps find the answer to something that’s been puzzling you for a while.

Biography

Jacquie has been an amateur astronomer for 25 years, and has been active in outreach activities for 20 years of that. She spent six years under the dome at the Scitech Planetarium in Perth, and 17 years as a volunteer night-tour guide at Perth Observatory. After moving to Melbourne in 2014, she became a regular with the outreach team for Mount Burnett Observatory. At home, she slips a video camera into the back of her 8″ SCT to record lunar and asteroid occultations for the RASNZ Occultation Section and she blogs her love of the sky in all its glory at “A Portfolio of Sky” (http://aportfolioofsky.com/).
