Abstract

PixInsight (http://pixinsight.com/) is an advanced platform for image processing designed specifically for astrophotography and other forms of technical imaging. It runs on Windows, OS X, Linux and FreeBSD. It is extremely powerful but has a fairly steep learning curve for new users. Rick Stevenson has been using PixInsight for several years and rarely uses anything else for astronomical image processing. He will demonstrate the PI user interface and guide the attendees through a simple LRGB workflow for CCD data from calibration to a final image ready for web publication. Sample data will be provided.

Biography

Rick Stevenson is a keen amateur astrophotographer, regularly travelling to dark sites around South-East Queensland on new moon weekends. He also shares remote observatories in California, New Mexico and Chile. He is a member of the PixInsight “PTeam” and has contributed to the development of PI. Rick has been processing astronomical images in PI since 2011 and there are many examples here. Rick is a professional “computer geek.” He recently retired from his day job as Chief Research Officer of an Australian-owned US technology company and is still an Adjunct Professor in the school of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering at the University of Queensland.
