Abstract

Captain Henry Evans Baker was one of the first telescope makers in Australia. Captain Baker embraced and introduced new technology onto the goldfields of Victoria. He was also instrumental in helping others to do so. At the age of over 70 years, Captain Baker embarked on his greatest and lasting work, the 26″ Great Equatorial Telescope, now called “The Baker”.

Biography

Saeed Salimpour: With a background in advanced physics & mathematics focusing on Astrophysics and Fluid physics, a degree in design/photography and now studying his Masters in Astronomy, Saeed has spent the better part of a decade making fundamental physics and astronomy accessible to everyone, irrespective of their background. His goal has been to find new ways to simplify the some of the complex concepts and present current research to a non-technical audience. Although his research interests are in understanding the dynamics of galaxy/cluster evolution and the role that Dark Matter plays in large-scale structures, he enjoys delving into the history of astronomy/astrophysics and the individuals whose contributions seem to have been forgotten. Having spent time as a science writer overseas, and a private tutor, he suddenly found himself in Ballarat and is currently the science & education officer (volunteer) at the Ballarat Observatory, charged with designing a variety of programmes for school groups, teachers and the public.
