Astronomy and 3D printing

Abstract

This presentation will describe my recent ‘adventures’ in 3D printing a few parts for a telescope accessory when I found the commercially available part did not fit. Based on my brief experience in this, I will outline the various pros and cons that I’ve found. I will also have a few of my failures available for the audience to inspect.

Biography

Murray hails from Wellington, New Zealand and earned a PhD in Astrophysics at Victoria University of Wellington in 1996. Since then he has worked in the research section of Opus, one of New Zealand’s largest engineering consultancy companies – mainly so he can indulge his expensive hobbies (astronomy and archery). His main astronomical interest in recent years has been occultations, and he is the editor of the RASNZ Occultation Section’s circular.
